In the past various endemic viruses affected the agro-based production or agricultural and economy simultaneously. The impact of coronavirus is huge due to the pandemic nature of the virus and community transmission is the main reason behind the smouldering impact of Covid19 pandemic. Supply and demand are the two prime features of an agro-based economy. Most of the agro-based industries were closed due to lockdown, which generated unemployment. Loss of agriculture production will take the hunger rate to a new high to 83 million, means that one out of a hundred people in the world remain hungry. The resurgence of Covid19 pandemic strikes a powerful chord among analysts and they came to the conclusion that the number of hungry people will touch an all-time high of 135 million in 2023. Almost 67% of the world population depend on agriculture production for both ends meet. Agriculture production contributes 40% of the world's GDP. A maximum number of peoples of developed countries depend on agriculture production for their livelihood. The leading food-producing countries of the world are China, USA, Brazil, India and Russia. We will discuss the effect of Covid19 pandemic on the leading food-producing countries of the world.

1. China

Covid-19 pandemic and its global impact on food and agriculture production is cause for concern and hurt China the second largest economy of world. China never allowed coronavirus to take pandemic shape, which failed to stall the economic growth, agricultural and industrial production of China. The food production of China was not affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The contact tracing and clinical testing curbed the transmission nature of the Covid19 pandemic disease. A recent study reveals that China has enough food stock to counter any critical situation.

According to WHO coronavirus is not transmitted through food consumptions. There is no denying the fact that animal tissue is the good conveyor of the coronavirus. Although Covid19 pandemic disrupt the food supply chain of the world and creates a lot of trouble for those countries already struggle with hunger and poverty. The disruption of the food supply chain raises the price of food by 20% during the pandemic period. The high cost of food, unemployment forced the people of many low-income countries to compromise with the quality and quantity of food consumed on daily basis. The international supply of food also dented due to low demand from various countries. The average food consumption of some low-income countries took a new low during the Covid19 pandemic time.

2. USA

Food production in the USA was not impacted by the Covid19 pandemic. The country has enough cereals to counter any crisis. The USA also exports food during this torrid time. The meat production reached the surplus point, which is incredible.

3. Brazil

Covid19 pandemic reached a catastrophic stage in Brazil, but agricultural growth remained unaffected. The food production registered a growth of 2.5% and the total contribution of Brazil to agro-based international export is 8 percent.

4. India

India is the fourth largest food producer in the world. The Covid19 pandemic has dented the economy and GDP shows negative growth in the 2020 financial year. The same can not be applicable for the agricultural sector, which shows a positive growth of 3.4 per cent. The agro-based sector was affected by the low level of consumption, due to the implication of lockdown and low availability of labour. Huge stockpiles of food help the government to handle the crisis begets by Covid19 pandemic. The government promulgates three ordinances, which is potent enough to boost agriculture production.

5. Russia:

Once a superpower and arch-rival of the USA, now lost in delirium. Russia's economy is severely affected by the Covid19 pandemic. Multiple sanctions already jeopardized Russia's economy. Now Russian's economy makes a lot of plunges and struggles due to the sudden attack of coronavirus. But the agricultural production remains untouched by the pandemic disease. In concurrent time, Russia is the biggest exporter of food grain after Ukraine. Livestock production testified a rapid growth. Food production in Russia depends on the labour force of Central Asia. The Russian government will remove definitely chal-chalk out contingency plans to resolve the issue related to farm labour.  

Most developing countries of the world depend on agriculture production for economic sustenance. The export of food is at a downward crescendo due to a sudden drop in demand. The prolonged existence of Covid19 pandemic will weigh heavily on stockpiles of food and purge the storage rooms from food grains, which will jeopardize the very existence of people living below the poverty line.
